Maneuvers
TURN IN THE ROAD USING FORWARD AND REVERSE GEARS
The examiner will ask you to pull up in a safe, convenient and legally position on the left. He will then say turn the car around using forward and reverse gears.
Stage 1
Prepare the car by selecting first gear, setting the gas and finding the bite.
Observe to see if it is safe to start the maneuver (look in front, behind and blind spots)
Move the car forward at a speed of a slow walking pace and apply steering to full right lock as fast as you can. This makes the car turn very sharply to the right. Our intent is to get the front of the car to face the curb.
As we near the curb we need to take the steering we put on back off, this is so the wheels are straight before we stop the car at the curb. So looking through the windscreen when the TAX DISC looks like it’s on the curb quickly turn 1 ½ turns to the left with the steering wheel and stop the car with the foot brake, then handbrake on and select neutral.
Stage 2
Prepare the car by selecting reverse gear, setting the gas and finding the bite.
Observe to see if it is safe to start the maneuver (look in front, behind and blind spots)
Move the car backwards at a speed of a slow walking pace but apply steering to full left lock as fast as you can. We also need to look over our left shoulder as we reverse until we get half way across the road, then we need to look over our right shoulder because we are looking for the curb coming close to bottom corner of the drivers door window. As the corner of the window nears the curb you then need to take 1 ½ turns off the steering to straight the wheels up. As the bottom corner of the drivers door window is on the curb stop the car with the foot brake, handbrake and select neutral.
Stage 3
Prepare the car by selecting first gear, setting the gas and finding the bite.
Observe to see if it is safe to start the maneuver (look in front, behind and blind spots)
Move the car forwards at a speed of a slow walking pace but apply steering to full right
If you clear the curb on the opposite side of the road check your mirrors (centre and right) and accelerate your car.
If you won’t clear the curb on the opposite side of the road you will need to repeat stages 2 and 3 again.
Remember you are the obstruction so if someone comes on to the scene they have priority and you need to stop. The positions you stop at are the end of stage1 and the end of stage 2.
REVERSE AROUND A LEFTHAND CORNER
The examiner will ask you to pull up in a safe, convenient and legally position on the left before the next junction. He will then say turn the car around using the corner in front of you (left hand reverse).
Stage 1
Prepare the car by selecting first gear, setting the gas and finding the bite.
Observe to see if it is safe to start the maneuver (look in front, behind and blind spots)
Move the car off at a slow speed. Cancel any signal that you may have put on as you move off. As you move along the road you need to look into the new road, you are looking for any obstruction that may prevent you completing your maneuver (ie parked cars). Once you’ve looked to see its safe, check your centre mirror and left door mirror. You are looking to see if any one would benefit from a signal. If you need to signal it needs to go on after the point of no return for that junction (see diagram). You now need to pull up on the left slightly wider than a normal parked position. (Put the curb in between the ● and ● dots on the windscreen of my car) 2 to3 car lengths passed the junction, Handbrake and neutral.
Stage 2
First seat yourself so you can look through the rear window without you neck aching. (Put your shoulder into the seat).
Prepare the car by selecting reverse gear, setting the gas and finding the bite.
Observe to see if it is safe to start the maneuver (look in front, behind and blind spots)
Move the car off at a very slow walking pace. Looking through the rear window, reverse the car straight back to the point of turn. Point of turn is when the rear wheels are level with the first curved curb stone. The ● dot in the middle of the rear window should be close to the curb so you can use this as a guide to reverse the car back straight. As you reverse back the curb will look as if it’s moving across the back window. Keep going back straight until the ● dot in the corner of the rear window is on the curb. This puts you at the point of turn.
Stage 3
You now need to do a set of observation to check it is safe to apply steering. Remember as you apply steering the front of the car swing out across the other side of the road into the path of danger. To steer around the corner apply steering to keep the ● dot on the curb. Basically let your eyes tell your hands what to do. As you go around the corner there with be a point where you can see straight curb stones the rear window. Stop the car.
Stage 4
Now that you can see straight curb stones in the rear window, you need to do a set of observations to check it’s safe to reverse up the new road. Looking through the rear window, keep the steering on until the ● dot in the middle of the rear window nears the curb. You now need to take steering off to drive the ● dot along the curb. Reverse into the new road 2 to 3 car lengths then stop the car with the foot brake. Apply the Handbrake and select neutral.
RIGHT HAND REVERSE AROUND A CORNER
The examiner will ask you to pull up in a safe, convenient and legally position on the left before the next junction. He will then say turn the car around using the corner your right. (right hand reverse).
Once you’ve looked to see its safe, check your centre mirror and right door mirror. You are looking to see if any one would benefit from a signal. If you need to signal it needs to go on after the point of no return for that junction (see diagram). You now need to pull up on the right slightly wider than a normal parked position (Put the curb in the corner of the windscreen) 2 to3 car lengths passed the junction, Handbrake and neutral.
The ● dot in the right hand corner of the rear window should be close to the curb so you can use this as a guide to reverse the car back straight. As you reverse back the curb will look as if it’s moving across the back window. Keep going back straight until the ● dot in the rear quarter window is on the curb. This puts you at the point of turn.
Stage 3
You now need to do a set of observation to check it is safe to apply steering. Remember as you apply steering the front of the car swing out across the other side of the road into the path of danger. To steer around the corner apply steering to keep the ● dot on the curb basically let your eyes tell your hands what to do. As you go around the corner there with be a point where you can see straight curb stones the rear window.
Stage 4
Now you can see straight curb stones in the rear window you need to do a set of observations to check it’s safe to reverse up the new road. Looking through the rear window, keep the steering on until the ● dot in the corner of the rear window nears the curb. You now need to take steering off to drive the ● dot along the curb. Reverse into the new road 4 to 5 car lengths then stop the car with the foot brake, Handbrake and neutral.
